The Story Behind the Fragrance

Every family has traditions that quietly become a part of who they are.

For ours, Christmas always begin with finding the perfect Fraser Fir. Growing up in North Carolina, there was never any question about the kind of tree we'd bring home. North Carolina is famous for growing Fraser Firs, and to us, there simply wasn't a better Christmas tree. It wasn't just about finding the fullest tree or the most perfect shape--it had to have that unmistakable fragrance. Fresh, crisp, and woodsy, the scent of a Fraser Fir meant one thing; Christmas had arrived.

Once we'd found "the one", the loose branches would be trimmed, and the tree would be loaded onto the roof. The trimmed branches never went to waste, mom would weave them through the wrought-iron railings on our front porch and, If there were enough, she'd create a beautiful wreath for our front door.

Dad would wrestle the tree into its stand, once we got home, while the rest of us watched from a distance. After letting it sit for a night, decorating day became one of my favorite family traditions. My mom, my sister, and I carefully unpacked our handmade ornaments collected over the years, draped strands of popcorn we'd threaded ourselves, and filled the house with the voices of Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, and Elvis spinning on the record player. When the tree was finally finished, my sister and I would cover in with silver tinsel, and dad would lift the angel onto the top--a tradition that always made it feel complete. One year, he surprised my mom with a beautiful golden lace angel that became our tree topper every Christmas after that.

Years later, when I had children of my own, we continued the tradition. We'd pick out our tree alongside nana and poppy, before gathering back at the house to decorate. After my dad passed in 2007, our fresh cut trees eventually gave way to the convenience of an artificial tree, but the traditions never changed. Elvis, Crosby, and Nat King Cole still filled the house. We still baked Christmas cookies. And my favorite part remained the same--sitting around the table with my children, making salt dough and popsicle stick ornaments that would find their place on the tree year after year, and now find a place on their own trees, with their own families.

Fraser Fir is more than the scent of Christmas to me. It's the fragrance of family traditions lovingly passed from one generation to the next, and a reminder that while seasons change, the memories we create together become part of who we are forever. Even today, one breath of Fraser Fir doesn't just smell like evergreen-it smells like joy, happiness, and home.
